DCRP/MP/25/05: EREC G94

Distribution Code·regulation·medium·29 Mar 2026·source document

What is being proposed

This is a new document developed to address managing the risks of providing a new connection point to premises with an existing connection point, or where adjacent premises have an existing connection point, irrespective of whether the existing connection point is provided by the same DNO or another DNO.The document outlines a standardised approach for managing the technical and safety risks associated with providing multiple electricity connection points in close proximity, particularly in light of the increasing demand driven by technologies such as electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.

Details

Analysis

Distribution Network Operators must now follow standardised technical procedures when providing new connection points to premises that already have connections, or are adjacent to premises with existing connections, regardless of which DNO provided the original connection. The new EREC G94 standard addresses safety and technical risks from multiple connection points in close proximity. This responds to increased demand for additional connections driven by EV charging infrastructure.

Why it matters

This creates operational consistency across DNOs but does not address the underlying constraint that multiple connections at single premises reveal — inadequate initial connection capacity. As such, it administers the symptom rather than pricing the scarcity that drives demand for additional connection points.

Key facts

  • New EREC G94 standard effective 2026-03-29
  • Applies regardless of which DNO provided existing connection
  • Targets EV charging infrastructure demand
