The SIF aims to find and fund ambitious, innovative projects with the potential to accelerate the transition to net zero. These projects should help shape the future of the gas and electricity networks and succeed commercially where possible. The SIF is delivered in partnership with Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The third round for the Alpha phase of the SIF was open to applications in June 2024 for the four Innovation Challenges: whole system network planning and utilisation to facilitate faster and cheaper network transformation and asset rollout novel technical, process and market approaches to deliver an equitable and secure net zero power system unlocking energy system flexibility to accelerate electrification of heat enabling power-to-gas (P2G) to provide system flexibility and energy network optimisation Further details about these projects will be published on the Energy Networks Association’s Smarter Networks Portal.
