2.7.1 (Monthly)

Table 2.7.1 Transfer statistics in the domestic gas and electricity markets, monthly, Great Britain
Transfer statistics refer to the number of customers switching from one energy supplier to another. Since January 2014, this includes all suppliers for Electricity and Gas. Previous to this date Gas transfers only covered the main six suppliers.
Figures do not include switching payment method when staying with the same company, or where a customer switches to another offer provided within the same parent company.
The figures in this table do not include data on switching rates in Northern Ireland. At present, the electricity market in Northern Ireland is largely monopolistic and subject to the Utility Regulator's price controls, although a start has been made to open the market to competition. Gas is not yet widely available in Northern Ireland.
All figures have been rounded to the nearest thousand.
Note 1. Prior to June 2012, data presented in this table was presented as average monthly transfers for each quarter.
Note 2. Ofgem provide switching levels which cover all suppliers in the domestic electricity market. From January 2014, Ofgem provided gas switching levels on the same basis for the first time. Previous to this gas switching levels only covered the main six suppliers. For this reason published gas transfers will be artificially high in quarter 1 of 2014 compared to earlier quarters.
Note 3. Between January 2014 and May 2017, total gas customer numbers do not include that of supply points connected to independent gas transporters (IGTs). The Department since make estimates for total customers with IGTs and now include this in the total count of gas customers. From June 2017, total gas customers do now include IGT's.
Note 4. Customer numbers represent the total number of meters for that fuel type rather than individuals.
Note 5. Since April 2016 data supplied to the Department has included additional filtering to remove non-domestic customers. This data is sourced from network operators and filtered by the active suppliers in the market, who to the best of Ofgem's knowledge are operating in the domestic and non-domestic segments of the energy market. For this reason the data supplied from April 2016 onwards may be more accurate but lower than previous levels.
Note 6. From July 2015 Ofgem reviewed the methodology for domestic Gas customer numbers to exclude de-energised meters as well as users with very high consumption not believed to be domestic.

About this data
Data in these tables shows the percentage of domestic electricity customers in each Public Electricity Supplier region split by type of supplier and payment type.
Public Electricity Suppliers (PES) were the 14 electricity companies created when the electricity market was privatised in the 1990s, following the Electricity Act 1989
This release refers to 'Home suppliers', this denotes companies that were the former public electricity suppliers within their own distribution areas (or their parent company).
'Non-home suppliers' are new entrant suppliers to the market or former public electricity suppliers operating outside of their former distribution areas.
Equivalent data for gas is available in Table 2.5.1, see the Website link below for related series.
This series has been paused following the removal of the home and non-home split for this statistical series

2.4.1 (Quarterly)

Table 2.4.1 Percentage of domestic electricity customers with a non-Home supplier, by region, quarterly
Before September 2016 Home and Non Home customer number proportions for All Payment Types were not adjusted.
Figures in this table are primarily based on data supplied by larger energy suppliers.
This data covers approximately 86% of the energy market. The unsurveyed suppliers are those newer to the market, without a home region, and so before adjustment the figures are weighted to a larger proportion of customers being with the Home region supplier.
Since September 2016 the Department has published adjusted proportions for All Payment Types so as to provide a more representative figure of all customers in Great Britain who are with a Non Home supplier.
A methodological reclassification of some tariff payment types from Credit to Direct Debit by data suppliers has resulted in lower Credit proportions and Direct Debit proportions compared to previous data from March 2017 onwards.
From December 2017 onwards, the Department takes account of 100% of the electricity market in these figures.
Competition is still limited in scope for domestic customers in Northern Ireland, so this country has been excluded from this table.
Includes electricity customers on both standard electricity tariffs and time of use tariffs such Economy 7.
Home supplier denotes the former public electricity suppliers within their own distribution areas, or their parent company.
Non-home suppliers are new entrant suppliers and the former electricity suppliers outside of their distribution areas.
Note 1. The regions used in this table are the distribution areas of the former Public Electricity Suppliers (PES regions):
