Home decarbonisation: the role of the residential sales and lettings sector
Summary
DESNZ behavioural research examining how estate agents, letting agents and property managers could support home decarbonisation through energy efficiency improvements and low-carbon heating installation. Research found home decarbonisation is currently low priority for both professionals and consumers, but identified opportunities to increase sector engagement.
Why it matters
Provides insights into barriers to residential heat pump deployment and energy efficiency uptake, relevant to achieving residential decarbonisation targets and Clean Power 2030 goals through non-regulatory channels.

Previous research conducted in different countries has identified that the residential sales and lettings sector (RSLS) is a key influence on homeowners’ knowledge, attitudes, and decisions relating to home decarbonisation.
